Welcome to Elul Meditations

Elul is the Hebrew month immediately preceding the Yamim Hanora'im, the Days of Awe. Elul has traditionally been a time for spiritual preparation.  A time to begin thinking about the themes and issues we address at Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services.

I post an "Elul Meditation"  each day of Elul (except on Shabbat).  Some are longer, some are shorter.  Some are more traditional, some may be a bit unexpected.  None of these are original to me.  Rather, this is a collection of short readings I've curated over the years from a variety of sources.  I have included the citation of authorship in every possible case.

If you think you would enjoy reading an Elul Meditation each גשט (From Friday, August 21st through the eve of Rosh Hashanah, September 18th), just fill in the form below.

Please share this information with anyone you think might be interested.   I will not share your email address with anyone.  At all.

days of awe

Some call these the "High Holidays" ... but "High" seems much less apt then the more traditional "Days of Awe." In this session we will explore the concept of "awe" from Abraham Joshua Heschel to Lily Tomlin!

Jews are "the people of the book" ... words are our currency.  Yet we turn to the speechless shofar to express the ineffable.  Is the shofar meant to communicate to us or for us?

Avinu Malkeinu

Sunday, August 30, 2020

One of our iconic terms to refer to God is "Avinu Malkeinu" ... our Father, our King.  How does this gendered language effect our relationship with God?  What is our image of the One to whom we direct our prayers during these Days of Awe?

Abraham, faithful servant of God, paradigm of loyalty, obedience, and moral courage...stands over his son wielding a knife, ready to sacrifice him at God's behest ... or does he?  And why do we read this on Rosh Hashanah?
